Basketball in the New Year

Tonight is a fairly low key Wednesday night in Las Vegas.  Mid work week, holidays are over, it’s time to get back into the swing of every day normal life. I’ve been watching hoops since 3:30 local time, and I am currently waiting for the BYU vs UNLV game at 7:00 local time. Just a few thoughts and observances as we kick off conference play across the country.

1. Why can’t the Mtn. get HD? I already can’t stand The Mountain in general. It’s existance prevents Mountain West basketball from finding its way on ESPN more than barely ever. If it’s going to be around, at least it could pick up a few HD cameras. I’m forced to watch this stuff, it should be worth watching.

2. Michigan State looks good, off to a 2-0 start in conference with wins on the road vs Northwestern (convincingly) and a clutch and grab jerk fest against ol Bucky and king EOF himself this afternoon. Wisconsin has a bunch of random jerk players and a jerk coach. They still lost in East Lansing though. Ol Dre Dre Green, AKA, the dancing teddybear, continues to be a great player. Wisconsin is stupid, and their coach looks like a dinosaur.

3. UNLV at BYU tonight. How did UNLV draw two roadies to start conference play against the two toughest places to play in the conference? After visiting Provo, Vegas heads down to New Mexico and their could be buy probably isn’t gangster program. New Mexico is really sweet at basketball. If UNLV can split these two games, they’ll be in the driver seat early in league. If they lose both, it’s really no big deal. If they win both, Steve Fisher will still have AIDS. Not really feeling good about UNLV’s chances tonight, for what it’s worth.

God, this non HD is brutal. I sound like a spoiled brat. I’ve worked hard to become basketball spoiled.

Cornell is up on Kansas in the second half. That would be pretty neat.

4. Western Michigan beat Sam Houston by 1 over the weekend. With wins over VCU and almighty College of Charleston (who beat UNC), Western now owns shucks howdy in a round about but totally viable in my eyes, kind of way. The Broncos also sport the MAC’s best RPI ranking currently (68), and start conference play this weekend when they host Eastern. WMU also plays four of its first six conference games at home. It’s time to grind out a nice seed for the conference tournament fellas, get it going. Also, David Kool is my best friend.

My next game is next week (!), when UNLV hosts San Diego St. My 50 games project has taken a few detours. I am currently in the process of ensuring I make it and will update later as to how. One addition which I did not count before is a trip to Salt Lake City to catch the regional finals of the tourney after I get back from Buffalo. My special lady friend and our former neighbors (best in the world) have stated they’re interested in going. Should make for a decent trip.
